Here is a really simple way to shorten long bread crumb trails without causing the customer to loose access to the crumbs along the trail. I needed to a way trim the breadcrumb but I didn't want to make things harder for costumers so I decided to keep the first crumb (home), and the last two. All the rest in between are replaced by an ellipsis. To further aid usability I added title tags so hovering over the breadcrumb reveals the titles they display.
